VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Drexel men's soccer team defeated the Villanova Wildcats (0-2) in its season opener on Sunday, 3-0. With the victory, Michael Marchiano earned first collegiate win as a head coach.
The Dragons got on the board early at Villanova. Laolu Daranijo received a pass from Michael McCarthy and finished the play to put the Dragons up 1-0. McCarthy was credited with his second career assist on the play.
Later in the first half, Chris Donovan picked up where he left off the last time the Dragons took the field. He scored the 11th goal of his career in the 36th minute, giving the Dragons a two-goal lead.
The Dragons got an insurance goal midway through the second half. Kyle Tucker crossed the ball to Daranijo, who put the Dragons ahead, 3-0, in the 67th minute. It was the first multi-goal game for Daranijo.
The Drexel defense appeared to be in mid-season form as Villanova could not put together much on the offensive end. The Wildcats were held to just 11 shots, but only four were on target. All four of those were stopped by Drexel goalkeepers Cameron Sanders and Stephen Kopsachilis. Sanders played the first half while Kopsachilis played the final 45 minutes.
The Dragons will return to the pitch when they travel to Saint Joseph's on Saturday, Feb. 27. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
