NEWARK, N.J. – The Drexel women's soccer opened the long-awaited season with a 3-1 loss at NJIT on Sunday afternoon. The team returned to the field for the first time in almost 16 months, but came up short on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
The Highlanders, got on the board first in the games 29th minute. NJIT's Corbin Reifschneider knocked home a rebound off a Lizzy Wolf shot that hit the post to put the Highlanders on the board. Drexel maintained possession for a majority of the half, but NJIT scored a late goal to take a two-goal cushion to intermission. With less than two minutes to go, Alexis Ocampo fired a shot from approximately 30-35 yards away that went off Drexel goalkeeper Miyuki Schoyen and into the net.
Reifschneider picked up her second goal of the game early in the second half to give NJIT a commanding 3-0 lead. Drexel was able to get on the board for the first time in the 81st minute. The Dragons were pressing in the offensive zone when Delaney Lappin fired a shot that was saved. Maggie Daeche picked up the loose ball and converted for her first career goal. That was as close as Drexel would get as the Highlanders held off the Dragons the rest of the way.
Schoyen made three saves in goal for the Dragons in 45 minutes. Molly Piso started the second half in goal for the Dragons. It was the first collegiate game for the freshman, who turned aside two of the three shots on goal she faced.
Drexel is scheduled to play its home opener on Thursday afternoon. Big-East foe Villanova will visit Vidas Field for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
