WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Drexel's comeback at William & Mary came up just short as the Tribe defeated Drexel, 2-1, on Thursday evening in Southern Virginia. The Dragons scored early in the second half, but were unable to tie the game despite playing well over the final 30 minutes.
The game was scoreless until late in the first half. William & Mary (1-1, 1-1) broke the drought with a pair of goals late in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead. Ashley Drum and Lily Saunders found the back of the net less than four minutes apart as the Tribe took a two-goal lead to the locker room. William & Mary controlled the first half play and outshot the Dragons, 14-1.
It was a different story in the second half, The Dragons came out strong and didn't wait long to get on the board. Puk Thewessen fed the ball in to Avery Powell, and the junior scored for the first time this season to cut the Tribe lead in half. The Dragons had six of the 11 shots over the final 30 minutes, but could not even the score as they dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Megan Hadfield made seven saves for the Dragons, including five in the first half. Amber Brouwer had three shots for DU, two of which were on goal.
Drexel returns home tonight and has a quick turnaround. The Dragons will face Villanova on Saturday afternoon in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
