PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team (5-3-1, 1-1-1 CAA) defeated the Northeastern Huskies (0-4-1, 0-2-1 CAA) by a score of 4-0 on Friday afternoon. Joey Martini scored two goals while Chris Donovan scored one goal and had two assists.
The Huskies started the game with two quick scoring opportunities. Nine seconds in, an NU shot was saved by Drexel keeper Stephen Kopsachilis, who had to spring and extend to his right to make the nearly impossible save. Northeastern then followed with another shot 30 seconds later that went high.
The Dragons countered the Husky offense by scoring two quick goals. Donovan scored the first in the seventh minute of the game. The junior finessed his way through the Northeastern defense and beat the Husky keeper. Drexel put another goal in the net in the eighth minute of play, just 38 seconds after its first point. Donovan crossed the ball from the right side and found Martini ready to finish the play in the box. It was Martini's first of the season.
Drexel tacked on another goal in the 52nd minute. Martini received a pass from Donovan and scored his second goal of the season to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead. The Dragons then scored their last goal of the game in the 69th minute. Laolu Daranijo started the play by passing to Patrick Murphy. After the pass, Daranijo broke through the Northeastern defense and received a through ball from Murphy, and scored his seventh goal of the season.
The Dragons were firing on all cylinders today. Drexel held Northeastern to 13 shots. Six of those shots were on goal and saved by Kopsachilis, who picked up his third win of the year.
Drexel will return to Vidas Field to host the Delaware Blue Hens in its final game of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 10.
