Men's Swimming Wins Two Medals on Second Night of CAA Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Drexel men's swimming team finished its second day at the CAA Championships on Friday. The Dragons won two medals on Friday, including a bronze medal in the 200 medley relay and a gold medal in the 100 fly.
To start night two of the championships was the 200 medley relay. Carson Huff, Kacper Karnik, Paris Raptis and John Scully finished the race in 1:27.97. That time earned the four swimmers a bronze medal. Karnik's split time of the breaststroke set a program record at 53.83.
The 400 IM was the first individual event of the night, and the Dragons had three swimmers participating, all in the B-Finals. John Klein punched his ticket to the finals with a time of 4:06.45. Joining Klein was Xabier Carneiro (4:06.26) and Will Soleo (4:07.00). In the B-Finals, Carneiro finished in third, touching the wall in 4:02.36. Soleo touched the wall in 4:03.88 and finished in fifth, and Soleo finished the race in 4:07.23 and finished in sixth.
In the 100 fly, Raptis won the preliminaries race with a time of 47.42. Raptis returned and posted a program-record time of 47.10 race, earning himself a gold medal. It was the 11th medal of his career.
Kevin Spear advanced to the B-Finals of the 200 free after finishing his preliminary race with a time of 1:41.88. Spear completed the B-Finals race in 1:41.41, placing second.
Drexel had five swimmers move into the final races in the 100 breast. Patrick Cunningham (59.92), Scully (57.71) and Brendan Houle (1:00.39) finished their preliminary races and earned spots in the B-Finals. Zachary Valenzuela posted a 55.76, and Karnik finished with a 53.83 to earn spots in the A-Finals. Scully finished with a time of 57.35 and placed second, Houle touched the wall in 1:00.39 and placed seventh and Cunningham clocked in at 1:00.62, putting himself in eighth. In the A-Finals, Karnik finished in 53.97. That time placed him in fourth. Valenzuela finished the race in seventh with a time of 55.63.
Nikita Timoshenko (51.75) and Carson Huff (50.80) both advanced to the B-Finals in the 100 back. Huff finished the B-Final race in 50.70, earning himself second place. Timoshenko finished in sixth with a time of 51.73.
In the night's final event, the 800 free relay, the team of Carneiro, T.J. Given, Soleo and Spear represented the Dragons. The team finished the race in 6:51.74 and placed fifth.
The Dragons will return to the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Saturday, April 3, to finish the CAA Championships. Preliminaries will begin at 11:10 a.m., and finals will start at 7:25 p.m. Both can be seen on FloSports.
