PHILADELPHIA, Pa – Despite all of the challenges that were thrown their way in the 2020-21 school year, the Drexel wrestling team continued to excel on and off the mat. The Dragons closed out the year ranked seventh in the nation in cumulative GPA (3.455) and earned 10 individual Scholar All-Americans as announced by the National Wrestling Coaches Association on Thursday afternoon. The NWCA recognized 191 individual wrestlers from 59 different institutions across the country.
Drexel earned a spot amongst the top ten schools in the nation in GPA, listed just behind Hofstra University. The Dragons led the list of individual honorees with 10 Scholar All-Americans including Kyle Waterman, Chandler Olson, Jaxon Maroney, Tyler Williams, Gabe Onorato, Jared Donahue, Luke Nichter, Parker Kropman, Evan Barczak and Michael O'Malley.
"I'm super proud of what our team has been able to accomplish during this challenging year," said Mert '67 & Joanne '69 Hill Head Wrestling Coach, Matt Azevedo. "We put a big focus on being flexible and controlling our own actions and the guys responded by staying positive and being resilient throughout. Earning 10 Academic All-Americans and finishing in the top 10 as a team for the fourth year in a row is a great accomplishment."
Drexel's 10 honorees surpassed Hofstra, Stanford and Utah Valley who each received eight. The list also included 126 NCAA National Qualifiers, 37 All-Americans, five Finalists, and two National Champions.
