O'Malley Finishes Runner-Up at U23 World Team Trials; Qualifies As World Team Alternate

LINCOLN, Neb. – Two-time NCAA qualifier, Michael O'Malley, represented Drexel wrestling and the Pennsylvania Regional Training Center (PRTC) at the U23 World Team Trials in Lincoln, Neb. on May 28-29. O'Malley joined 24 other wrestlers at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, leading the way at 79kg with a second-place finish and bringing home All-American status.
The 2020 UWW Junior Nationals champion returned to the mat after recently finishing fourth at the 2021 Senior Nationals. O'Malley wrestled to a 4-2 record on the weekend, opening the competition with four straight wins. The Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. native recorded three dominating performances in the round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals with two tech fall victories and a 14-6 major decision. O'Malley put up a strong fight in the finals before falling in two tight matches to three-time Nebraska All-American, Michael Labriola.
As runner-up, O'Malley qualified to be an alternate for the U23 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia this November.
