PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel wrestling team is set to add a wealth of talent to its roster in the 2021-22 season. The Dragons welcome eight new faces including several state contenders.
Drexel will add wealth to multiple different weight classes including two wrestlers at 285lbs, one at 184lbs and the rest projected to fall anywhere from 125lbs-174lbs.
A graduate of Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J., Elijah Anthony joins the Dragons as a projected 285lb contender. Anthony enters his collegiate career after finishing third at the National Prep Championships. He is joined by fellow 285lb freshman Liam Dietrich. The Trinity-Pawling, N.Y. native also joins the Dragons with two top 10 finishes at the National Prep Championships.
In the mid-range weight categories, the Dragons welcome Alex Giordano (184lbs), Jack Janda (165/174lbs), Tate Nichter (157/165lbs) and Aboubakare Diaby (149/157lbs). Giordano, a Camden Catholic graduate, finished his high school career with an 89-14 career record and a sixth-place finish at the NJ State Championships (2020-2021 season). Giordano is joined by fellow Camden Catholic graduate Janda, who was an NHSCA Freshman Nationals Runner Up and competed to a 41-16 record before losing a lot of his career to injury. A 2019-20 PA State Championship finalist (sixth place), Nichter joins Drexel after competing to a 122-27 career record. Diaby, a Philadelphia native, will take the mat in the 149/157 weight range after wresting to a 73-47 record at Central High School.
The Dragons are bringing in twin brothers Desmond and Deon Pleasant to compete in the lightweight categories. Desmond (125lbs) competed to a 79-24 career record and was ranked one of the top 16 wrestlers at NJ States his junior year. Deon rounded out his career with an 86-30 record and will compete in either the 125lb or 133lb weight class.
Drexel looks to build on its successes in the 2021-22 season with the help of its newest wrestlers in addition to the return of multiple seasoned veterans.
