Radnor, Pa. - The Drexel golf team picked up its first victory of the young season on Tuesday by winning the Villanova Wildcat Fall Invitational. The Dragons trailed by four entering the final 18 holes, but had the best round of any team at the Radnor Valley Country Club and won by six strokes over URI, their next closest competitor. Drexel had four golfers finish in the top 10. The Dragons were led by Drue Nicholas, who shot two under par over the 54 hole event, and was tied for third overall.
Drexel played consistent golf all day and was impressive down the stretch. The four Drexel scorers shot a combined one-under par on the back. Jeffrey Cunningham fired a 67 on the day and was sixth overall in the tournament. He opened the round with a bogey, but responded by playing in four-under par the rest of the day. He had two birdies and seven pars on the back, while Nicholas was one under on the final nine holes. Nicholas shot par in his opening round and was one-under par in both the second and third round. Angelo Giantsopoulos had 13 pars and a birdie over his final 14 holes in the final round and had just one bogey on the day. He finished in fifth place overall (-1). Griffin Mitchell, playing in his first tournament as a Dragon, gave Drexel a much needed cushion on the 17th hole. The redshirt freshman holed out from the bunker for a birdie as Drexel's lead expanded over both URI and Delaware. Mitchell tied for ninth place.
The Dragons finished their second event of the fall season at 846, which was six shots over par. URI was at 852, while Delaware placed third at 854. Drexel will look for back-to-back wins beginning Monday in West Virginia. The Dragons play in the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational at the Pete Dye Country Club in Bridgeport.
