Opening Tip
The Drexel women's basketball team aims to continue its winning ways, taking on the William & Mary Tribe on Sunday, January 30. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
About Drexel
Drexel overcame a 10-point second quarter deficit as the Dragons pushed their winning streak to a dozen games with a 72-60 victory against the Elon Phoenix on Friday night. Tessa Brugler had her ninth double-double of the season in the game with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Hannah Nihill scored 21 to lead the Dragons.
Trailing 35-25 with 2:33 left in the second quarter at was the largest margin Drexel overcame to win a game since the CAA semifinals against James Madison on March 12, 2021 when DU was behind 39-27 with 44 seconds remaining in the second.
After hitting 19 twice in 2021-22, Brugler scored 20 against the Phoenix, the most ever for her in a Drexel uniform. She eclipsed the 20 point mark once in four years as an undergrad at Bucknell, netting 24 against George Mason on December 4, 2019.
Nihill was held scoreless on January 7 at Charleston, the first time in nearly two calendar years that happened. In the six games since, she's taken it out on the rest of the CAA, averaging 15.5 points per game and has posted 16 or more in four of the contests. She is shooting 43.5 percent (34-for-78) from the floor and 80.8 percent (21-for-26) at the line during the span.
Scouting William & Mary
William & Mary enters play 6-11 overall and 1-5 in the CAA following a 70-56 loss against Delaware on Friday night.
Riley Casey leads the Tribe in scoring at 13.5 a night followed by Phoenixville, Pa. native Sydney Wagner – who had a season-high 29 against Delaware – at 12.8. Bre Bellamy leads W&M with 5.6 rebounds per game while Wagner has 52 assists this season and Kate Sramac has 49.
Turnovers are a large part of the story for William & Mary who forces its opponents into 18.0 miscues a contest and has four players with 21 or more steals this season. For as many turnovers as it forces, however, it gives the ball up at an even greater rate, coughing it up 20.9 times a game.
While it may seem obvious, how well the ball is shot has a direct correlation on wins and losses for the Tribe, but specifically from three-point range. In its wins, W&M is 34.9 percent from distance, but, even after an 8-for-19 effort against UD, it connects on 31 percent of its attempts in losses.
Ed Swanson is in his ninth season as the head coach at William & Mary with a record of 122-119 in Williamsburg and a mark of 528-383 in 32 years as a collegiate head coach. He guided W&M to the Women's Basketball Invitational in 2015. Prior to coming to the Tribe, he spent 23 years at Sacred Heart, leading the Pioneers to the NCAA Tournament three times.
All-Time Series
Sunday is the 46th meeting between Drexel and Wiliam & Mary with the Dragons holding a 30-15 series lead. DU won 10 in a row in the series from January 16, 2011 through January 15, 2015 and has a 15-6 record overall in Williamsburg. The teams split last year's games with Drexel winning 64-58 on January 16 and the Tribe taking a 69-53 result on January 17.
