TOWSON, Md. – Towson rallied from a 14-point first half deficit to defeat Drexel at SECU Arena, 66-62. The Dragons are now 9-9 overall and 4-4 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while Towson is 7-2 in the league and 16-6. The teams split the season series with each team winning on its home court. Camren Wynter scored 20 points to lead the Dragons.
Drexel led at intermission, but the Tigers started the second half on an 11-2 run to get right back in it. The Dragons held on to the lead and had a six-point cushion at 47-41 after a Wynter bucket at the 11:34. Unfortunately for the Dragons, that would be their last points for quite some time. Towson held the Dragons scoreless for more than seven minutes during a 16-0 run that turned the game around. To Drexel's credit, they chipped away at the Tigers' 10-point lead and made it close down the stretch. Xavier Bell hit a short running jumper with 17 seconds to play to make it a two-point game. The Dragons pressed but Towson got the ball into Nicolas Timberlake, who was fouled with 10 seconds to play. He made both free throws to give the Tigers a four-point lead and the win.
Wynter finished the game 9-for-18 shooting as he reached the 20-point mark for the fifth time this season. Amari Williams added 10 points and had a team-high eight rebounds.
Charles Thompson had an outstanding night for Towson. He scored a career-high 23 points on 11-for-14 shooting and had a game-high 11 rebounds. The Tigers shot 63 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes and had four players score at least 10 points.
The Dragons played a solid first half on both ends of the court. They held the Tigers to just 22 points, which is the lowest total of a Drexel opponent in the first half this season. Towson was also 0-for-5 from deep in the first half. The Tigers entered the game leading the CAA in 3-point percentage. On the offensive end, Camren Wynter was able to have his way in the lane. The senior had 11 points in the first half, most coming on short jumpers in the lane.
The Dragons head home for the night and then travel to North Carolina tomorrow. They will face UNCW on Monday night at 7 p.m. The Seahawks are alone in first place in the Colonial Athletic Association.
