PHILADELPHIA – Amari Williams had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds as Drexel defeated Old Dominion in its season opener at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 71-59. Coletrane Washington added 15, all in the second half, as the Dragons defeated their former Colonial Athletic Association rival.
The Dragons led by just two points at intermission but opened the second half with a 7-2 run to take a seven-point lead. They would not relinquish that lead the rest of the night. Washington made three 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the half and then put the Dragons up by double digits with a steal and a lay-up. ODU (1-1) eventually chipped away at the lead and cut it to four with a minute to go, but Drexel iced the game at the free throw line. The Dragons made six of eight from the charity stripe in the final minute to earn the win. They shot 58 percent in the second half after making just 8-of-23 in the opening 20 minutes.
Williams picked up his seventh career double-double and was a force on both ends of the court all night. He blocked three shots and altered a number of other field goal attempts. Williams finished the game 5-for-7 from the floor. Justin Moore, a freshman from Philadelphia, started at the point and finished the game with nine points and a game-high five assists. Luke House came off the bench to score nine points and added three rebounds.
The Monarchs were led by Ben Stanley, who had a game-high 18 points. He was the only ODU player in double figures. The Drexel defense held ODU to just 35 percent shooting. The Monarchs did most of their damage on the offensive glass as they grabbed 18 offensive rebounds that led to 18 points.
