Penn Edges Drexel at the DAC, 64-59

PHILADELPHIA – Penn held off a late Drexel comeback to edge the Dragons in the Battle on 33rd Street at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 64-59 in front of a crowd of more than 2,300 spectators. The Dragons (1-1) trailed by as many as 15 in the second half, but cut the deficit to two with just under two minutes to play before the Quakers (1-3) sealed the game with four free throws in the final 30 seconds.
The Quakers, making just their third trip north on 33rd Street to the DAC, appeared to be in control early in the second half. Jordan Dingle and Max Lorca-Lloyd scored on back-to-back possessions, forcing the Dragons to call timeout with 14:41 to play trailing, 44-29. Drexel slowly chipped away at the lead late in the contest. The Dragons went on a 7-0 run, which included a highlight reel steal and a dunk by Amari Williams, to cut the lead to 57-55 On the Quakers next possession, Clark Slajchert quieted the crowd with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it a five-point lead. The Dragons trimmed into a three-point lead with 3.6 seconds to go on a Luke House 3-pointer, but Dingle made a pair of free throws as Penn won for the first time at the DAC.
Williams led Drexel with 20 points and seven rebounds. He was 8-for-14 from the field. Justin Moore, House and Jamie Bergens each finished with nine points. Drexel struggled all night from the free throw line, missing 11 of its 20 attempts. The Dragons were also just 25 percent from deep in the game.
Dingle led Penn with 21 points. Slajchert added 16 points, while Lucas Monroe snared a game-high 11 rebounds. The Quakers, who made their first 11 free throws on the night and finished 13-for-14 from the line, now lead the all-time series, 17-10.
Drexel returns to the DAC on Friday night when Arcadia visits University City for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
