Washington's Big Day Leads Dragons Past UT Arlington

ESTERO, Fla. - Coletrane Washington sank six 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 22 points as Drexel defeated UT Arlington at Hertz Arena in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Showcase, 59-38. The Dragons made a season-high 10 3-pointers and held the Mavericks (2-3) to just 25 percent shooting as they improved to 3-1 this season. Drexel will face Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday night. The 2022-23 men's basketball season is presented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98.
The Dragons led by just two early in the second half, but held the Mavericks to just 13 points in the second half. Drexel used an 10-2 run to take a double-digit lead and then closed the game by scoring 16 of the final 18 points.
Washington had perhaps his best game in his five seasons in University City. He knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in both the first and second half. Lamar Oden scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half and had six rebounds in the game. Amari Williams returned to the line-up and recorded his second double-double of the season. He also had four assists.
The Dragons got off to a quick start, mainly due to their long-range shooting. Drexel made five of its first 10 three-pointers and led by as many as 13 in the first half. UT Arlington chipped away at the lead and cut the deficit to just four at halftime.
Kyron Gibson scored 11 points to lead UT Arlington. The Cavaliers were just four of 18 from deep and despite their size advantage, were outrebounded by Drexel, 37-36.
Drexel and Florida Gulf Coast will play at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night in Estero, Fla. The winner will advance to the Gulf Coast Showcase title game on Wednesday.
