ESTERO, Fla. - Despite a solid offensive effort, the Drexel men's basketball team fell to Indiana State, 85-81, in the consolation game at the Gulf Coast Showcase. All five Dragons scored in double figures, led by Lamar Oden, Jr.'s 16 points. Drexel will head back to Philadelphia with a 3-3 record. The Sycamores improved to 5-1.
Indiana State took a five-point lead to intermission and kept it at a two-possession game for the first 12 minutes of the half. Drexel's Justin Moore, who had a career-high 13 points, scored on a runner in the lane with 7:51 to go to cut ISU's lead to 64-61. The Sycamores answered with a 3-point play by Cameron Henry to extend the lead to six. Drexel would hang around and battle the rest of the night, but just wasn't able to get the lead back down to three points.
Both teams had their offense clicking at Hertz Arena. The Dragons had their best shooting performance of the season, making 53 percent of their shots on the night. They were 11-for-21 from behind the arc and three different players made at least three treys. Indiana State was just a little bit better. They shot 55 percent from the floor, although the Dragons did limit them to just 7-for-23 from 3-point distance.
Oden led DU by making six of his nine shots and three 3-pointers. Amari Williams finished with 15 points and a game-high three steals. Coletrane Washington scored 13 points, while Mate Okros added 12. Both players were 3-for-5 from deep. Drexel committed just eight turnovers. Garfield Turner came off the bench to snare nine rebounds.
Henry and Xavier Bledson each had 22 points for Indiana State. Henry was 9-for-12 shooting and picked up a double-double with 10 rebounds. Robbie Avila chipped in with three 3-pointers and 11 points.
The Dragons return home in the morning and have a few days off before playing again. Drexel will tip-off next at Temple on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
