Late Run Propels Temple Past Drexel, 73-61

PHILADELPHIA – Amari Williams scored 18 points, but a late Temple run gave the Owls a 73-61 win in a game that was closer than the score indicated.
Drexel trailed for most of the contest, but took a one-point lead at the 7:49 mark. Coletrane Washington sank a 3-pointer to give the Dragons a 56-55 lead. Temple answered on a Khalif Battle answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession to put the Owls ahead for good. That started a 15-0 Temple run and ended the Dragons' hopes of defeating their cross-town rival for the first time since 2006. The Owls held Drexel off the board for a span of more than six and a half minutes before Justin Moore hit a 3-pointer to break the drought.
The game was evenly played throughout the contest. Temple held a four-point advantage at intermission, but couldn't put the Dragons away until the closing minutes. Drexel shot the ball well, making 44 percent from the floor and 43 percent from deep. The Dragons committed just nine turnovers despite playing a physical Owls' team. The also allowed just three Temple offensive rebounds.
Williams led the way with 18 points and was 7-for-13 shooting. The big man also blocked a pair of shots and had a team-high six rebounds. Moore added a career-high 14 points, while Washington scored all nine of his points in the second half after being saddled with foul trouble in the first half.
Battle had a nice night for the Owls. He scored 25 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made five of his nine long-range attempts. Hysien Miller added 20 points, made all three of his 3-point attempts and had seven assists for the Owls, who shot 56 percent in the game.
The Dragons will return to the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Wednesday night when Lafayette comes to town. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m.
