PHILADELPHIA - Coletrane Washington scored a game-high 18 points as Drexel defeated Lafayette in the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 64-56. Washington was one of three Dragons in double figures as Drexel evened its record at 4-4.
Lafayette (1-7) started off the game by going 10-for-10 from the floor on its way to a six-point lead early. The Leopards didn't miss a shot for almost 10 minutes. Drexel answered with a 9-0 run to take the lead for the first time since the opening bucket. The Leopards shot 59 percent in the half but found themselves down by a point at intermission, 30-29.
Drexel's offense and defense started clicking early in the second half. Lafayette opened the half with a bucket to take the lead briefly. However, that would be its last lead of the game. Drexel's defense clamped down and held the Leopards off the board for more than a five-minute stretch. During that time the Dragons went on a 10-0 run with Washington and Lamar Oden, Jr., each scoring five points. The Dragons lead increased to as many as 16 just minutes later with another scoring run of nine straight points. Lafayette tried to get back in the game with five second half 3-pointers. They cut the deficit to five with 2:59 to play, but after a few empty possessions, Drexel answered with a Washington jumper to increase the lead to seven and took control once again.
Washington had 13 of his 18 points in the second half. Oden, Jr. added 17 points and was 5-for-8 from the field. He had three 3-pointers. Amari Williams scored 16 points and led Drexel with seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. The Dragons finished the night shooting 49 percent from the field. They outrebounded the Leopard by 11.
Kyle Jenkins and C.J. Fulton each had 12 points for Lafayette. The Dragons held Leo O'Boyle, Lafayette's leading scorer to just eight points.
The Dragons are back at the DAC on Saturday afternoon. The Princeton Tigers come to town for a 2 p.m. game that can be seen live on NBC Sports Philadelphia+.
