Dragons Surge Past La Salle in OT, 65-58

PHILADELPHIA - Coletrane Washington and Amari Williams combined for 35 points as Drexel defeated La Salle in overtime on Saturday at Tom Gola Arena, 65-58. The Dragons defeated the Explorers for the fourth straight time in Gola as they improved to 5-5.
The Dragons opened the overtime period with six straight points and did not trail in the extra period. Washington started the scoring on a lay-in 90 seconds into overtime. Drexel came up with two straight stops on the defensive end and took a four point lead when Williams slammed home a dunk after a drop step to beat his defender. La Salle (5-5) had two chances to make it a one possession game, but each time the Drexel defense came up bit. Luke House grabbed a big rebound with 47 seconds to go and Washington was fouled a second later. He made both of his free throws to make it a six-point game. La Salle was held to just one field goal in the extra stanza.
Washington scored 21 points to lead the way as Drexel continued its impressive streak in Olney. Williams scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots. Drexel held the Explorers to just 35 percent shooting in the game. The Dragons had a big night on the glass, outrebounding their Atlantic 10 opponents by 10. That included 17 rebounds on the offensive end.
La Salle raced out to an 8-0 lead as the Dragons got off to a slow start offensively. Drexel made just one of its first 11 shots, but still only trailed by eight. The Dragons started the game by missing their first 11 3-point attempts, but made up for that by taking good care of the basketball and playing a strong defensive game. Drexel committed just two turnovers in the first half and chipped away to tie the game at 31-31 at intermission.
Drexel picked up the win despite shooting just 34 percent overall in the game and 4-for-23 from long range. Lamar Oden, Jr. snared nine rebounds, while Luke House added seven rebounds in 33 minutes off the bench. Anwar Gill led the Explorers with 15 points and eight rebounds. Jhamir Brickus and Jocius Rokas each added 12.
Drexel returns to action on Wednesday night when they visit Seton Hall in Newark, N.J.
