Williams Leads Dragons Past Elon in CAA Opener, 62-50

PHILADELPHIA – Amari Williams scored 10 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and handed out six assists as Drexel opened CAA play with a 62-50 win against Elon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Williams was one of four Dragons who scored in double figures as the Dragons improved to 7-6 overall on the season.
Drexel used a 13-2 run early in the second half to take the lead for good. Elon (2-12) led 33-32 when Scott Sherry made a free throw in the opening minutes of the half. Drexel answered with six straight points from Williams, forcing the Phoenix to call a time out. After the break, the Dragons forced a tough 3-point shot and on the other end, Luke House nailed his third 3-pointer of the game to put the Dragons ahead by eight.
Coletrane Washington led Drexel with 12 points and had three 3-pointers. Lamar Oden, Jr. and House each added 11 points. House, making his second-straight start grabbed seven rebounds and was 3-for-5 from deep, Williams was a force on both ends of the court. He altered numerous shots and finished the game with four blocked shots. It was the third time this season that the Drexel defense held an opponent to 50 points or less.
Drexel made 11 3-pointers, marking the second-straight game the Dragons reached double figures in threes. Overall from the field, the Dragons shot 42 percent. They outrebounded the Phoenix, 38-27 and had 12 rebounds on the offensive end.
Sheery and Sean Halloran each scored 11 to lead the Phoenix. Elon trailed by just three at intermission, but shot just 33 percent in the second half and made only two 3-pointers down the stretch. Max McKinnon chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.
The Dragons are back in action on the DAC on New Year's Eve. William & Mary makes its annual visit at 2 p.m. It will be the CAA opener for the Tribe, who had Thursday off.
