PHILADELPHIA – Drexel went on an 11-3 run to close the game as it defeated William & Mary at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on New Year's Eve, 66-56. The Dragons improved to 8-6 and 2-0 in CAA play.
In a game that featured seven ties and seven lead changes, William & Mary (5-9, 0-1 CAA) took the lead at 51-50 with 8:14 to play on a Gabe Dorsey turnaround jumper. Drexel's offense, which struggled at times in the early going, finally got on track soon thereafter. Amari Williams, who was a factor on both ends all night, answered with a drive to put the Dragons ahead for good. After a stop on the defensive end, Drexel extended the lead to four when Coletrane Washington drained an off-balance 3-pointer from the right wing, making it a 55-51 game. The Dragons had opened the game by missing its first 12 3-point attempts before Washington's trifecta. William & Mary countered with a bucket, but Drexel then scored eight-straight points and held the Tribe to just one field goal over the final 6:26 of the game. The Dragons shot 52 percent over the final 20 minutes.
Williams had another impressive game, stuffing the stat sheet for the second-straight game. The junior led Drexel with 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting. He also grabbed nine boards, rejected six William & Mary shots and had three steals. Justin Moore and Lamar Oden, Jr. each added 11 points. Oden tied Williams with a game-high nine rebounds.
Dorsey led the Tribe with 13 points. He was the only William & Mary player in double figures. The Tribe shot a blistering 50 percent from long-range in the first half (6-for-12) as the teams went to intermission tied at 30-30.
Drexel's defense, which entered the game 34th in the nation in scoring, held its third straight opponent and fourth in the last five games to under 60 points. The Dragons also held the visitors to just 37 percent in the second half and 38 percent in the game. They out rebounded the Tribe, 41-27 and forced 14 turnovers.
The Dragons begin 2023 with a road game at Towson on Thursday night. That game can be seen live on the CBS Sports Network.
