Dragons Survive Intense Road Battle With Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Keishana Washington scored a game-high 32 points as the Drexel University women's basketball team withstood a furious comeback effort, downing the Delaware Blue Hens 65-64 on Sunday afternoon.

- Washington had her third game with 30 or more points this season. She also pulled in four rebounds.
- Hannah Nihill scored 16 with five rebounds, five assists, and five steals, her sixth consecutive game with three or more takeaways.
- Tessa Brugler filled the stat sheet with nine points, nine rebounds, three blocks, and three assists.
- Mariah Leonard contributed with eight points and seven rebounds, four of them offensive.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drexel got off to a hot start, connecting on four of its first six shots, getting six points from Washington in the opening four minutes, as the Dragons raced to an 8-2 lead, forcing a Delaware timeout.
- The onslaught continued as DU shot 10-for-16 in the first period overall and outrebounded the Blue Hens 10-7 as Drexel held a 21-9 lead after 10 minutes with Washington posting 10 in the frame and Brugler dropping five points while collecting five boards.
- Changing over to the second stanza, the shooting fortunes reversed with the Dragons opening just 2-for-11 as Delaware battled back to 25-19 at the media timeout.
- Drexel righted the ship as the frame went on, delivering on five of its final six shots of the quarter, returning the advantage to double figures at intermission.
- The Dragons expanded the lead in the third quarter to as many as 15 at 47-32 on a Brugler jumper with 4:45 remaining before the Blue Hens worked their way back into the contest with a 15-2 run, slicing the lead to 49-47 with 1:03 to go in the period.
- After the Dragons returned the edge to 59-54 on a trey from Washington at the 5:49 mark, an 8-0 Delaware run gave the Blue Hens their first lead of the game at 62-59.
- Undaunted, Drexel had the final say as Washington hit back-to-back step back jumpers, the second one falling away from the right elbow to put DU on top 65-62. The Dragons then held serve on defense for a final possession to secure their 21st win of the year.
