Dragons Down NJIT, 6-1

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's tennis team continued its top-notch play on Saturday when it defeated the NJIT Highlanders, 6-1. The Dragons improve to 3-0 while the Highlanders drop to 1-1. For the Dragons, the last time they started a spring season with a 3-0 mark was in the 2011-12 season.
In doubles play, Xandy Hammitt paired with Alex de Sousa in the top-flight to defeat their opponents, 6-2. After the Highlanders took the second-seeded match, Juan Manuel Sanchez and Djordje Janackovic needed to win to clinch the doubles point for Drexel. They did so by taking the closely contested match, 7-5.
The Dragons continued their dominant performance in singles play, only dropping one match. De Sousa competed in the top-seeded match and defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-2. Sanil Jagtiani then finished in the No. 2 match, 6-3, 6-3. Matvey Radionov clinched the duel for the Dragons in the fourth-seeded match. The senior defeated his opponent, 6-3, 6-4.
In the fifth-seeded match, Janackovic defeated his opponent, 7-5, 6-1. Sanchez took care of business in the No. 6 singles match, 7-6 (6), 6-4.
The Dragons return to the Drexel Tennis Bubble on Sunday, Feb. 6, to host Bucknell at 1:30 p.m. As a reminder, there will be no visitors permitted inside the Drexel Tennis Bubble for home matches.
