
Historic Season For Women's Basketball Closes in WNIT Third Round

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Drexel University women's basketball team saw its historic season come to a close on Thursday night, falling 78-71 at the Seton Hall Pirates in the Third Round of the WNIT.

- Drexel closes the year 28-6. The 28 wins tie the most in program history while the six losses are the fewest.
- The WNIT run was the deepest for Drexel since their 2013 championship.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Hannah Nihill scored 20 in the game to lead Drexel, finishing with 1,434 in her career, 14th on the Dragons all-time list. She also had two steals, closing with 313, the second highest total in team history.
- Tessa Brugler netted 15 and grabbed 12 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season.
- Mariah Leonard scored 16 and pulled in six rebounds.
- Keishana Washington posted 11 in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drexel got off to a slow start, connecting on one of its first eight shots while the Pirates used their size advantage to take an early 12-5 lead at the opening media timeout. The Dragons started to find their footing as the quarter went on, connecting on a couple of treys before some late free throws saw SHU take a 17-11 lead after 10 minutes.
- Trailing 21-13 a minute into the second, DU ripped off an 8-4 run on a pair of layups each from Brugler and Leonard, closing to 25-21 at the midway mark of the frame.
- Leonard continued to shine in the period scoring twice more on back-to-back as the Dragons cut the lead to 30-29. After a layup inside for SHU, Tori Hyduke connected on a three-pointer, tying the game at 32-32 with 1:26 remaining in the half.
- The game remained close in the third quarter as both teams hit big shots. Nihill and Leonard once again led the offense, as a layup by Leonard tied the score at 42-42 with 3:04 to go in the period before Nihill delivered a trey with 2:27 left that gave Drexel its first lead of the night at 45-44.
- Seton Hall briefly went back up by two, but a 6-0 run to end the third period put Drexel up 51-47 with 10 minutes remaining.
- Drexel continued the push into the fourth, scoring the initial five point of the quarter, going on top 56-47 just 79 seconds in. The Pirates rallied, using a 9-2 run, slicing the Dragons edge to 60-59 with 4:50 remaining. SHU continued the run through the end of the game, closing out with a 17-8 run.
