BOSTON, Mass. - Drexel used a balanced offense and stifling defense to defeat Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena. The Dragons used a 14-0 run midway through the first half to take a big lead and went on to their fourth straight win against the Huskies. Garfield Turner scored a career-high 12 points off the bench as Drexel improved to 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. It was the Dragons fourth-straight win against their rivals from Boston.
Turner started Drexel's run with a lay-up off a feed from Jamie Bergens to put the Dragons ahead for good. Bergens followed that up with a floater in the lane before Mate Okros drained a 3-pointer. Lamar Oden capped the run with a 3-pointer of his own as the Dragons held the Huskies without a point for a stretch of 4:47. Drexel extended the lead to 16 points at the break, 44-28. Bergens had a big half with seven points and five assists.
Drexel didn't let up in the second half. Northeastern (6-10, 2-3 CAA) was unable to get closer than 14 points to go the rest of the way. Drexel's defense was solid as it held the Huskies to just four field goals in their first 16 attempts in the final 20 minutes as the lead grew to as many as 25 points.
Turner was a huge spark for the Dragons. He was 4-for-6 from the floor and had five rebounds to go along with his 12 points. Amari Williams added 12 points, while both Oden and Justin Moore finished with 10 points. Bergens contributed nine points to go with his season-high five assists. The offense was clicking all afternoon as Drexel sank eight of 18 from long range and finished the day 50 percent overall.
Masai Troutman had 12 points to lead Northeastern, while Jahmyl Telfort had 10 points and six rebounds.
The Dragons return home to face Hampton on Thursday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
