Dragons Roll Past Delaware State, 65-33

DOVER, Del. – High-powered offense and sound defense lifted the Drexel women's basketball team over the Delaware State Hornets on Friday night, 65-33.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Dragons, led by Laine McGurk and Momo LaClair, shot 27-for-56 in their first road matchup of the campaign. From long range, the Dragons found the bottom of the basket seven times.
The 33 points scored by Delaware State is the lowest by an opponent since beating Maine on December 4, 2021, 57-33.
Drexel's defense shined, holding Delaware State to 12-of-45 from the field. Furthermore, the Hornets were ice-cold from beyond the arc, shooting 1-for-13. Drexel also kept Delaware State at-bay at second-chance points with two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel jumped out to a hot start, holding the Hornets to six points in the first quarter and pouring on 18. A jumper by Chloe Hodges with six minutes left opened an 11-point run, including three-straight 3-pointers. Laine McGurk scored the first points of her collegiate career, knocking down a long ball that rattled around the rim.
The Dragons did not slow down in the second 10 minutes of play, scoring 21 points and keeping the Hornets at bay with just seven points. Through one half of play, Drexel's offense was evenly distributed. Amaris Baker led the team with eight points, and McGurk followed her with seven. Behind Baker and McGurk was a four-way tie for third. Brooke Mullin, Hodges, Jasmine Valentine, and Momo LaClair all finished the half with six points.
The third quarter was a defensive battle between both teams. The Dragon's defense, for the third quarter in a row, held the Hornets to less than 10. Delaware State scored eight points. Drexel's closed the third quarter with a 9-2 run and set itself up for a runaway fourth quarter, leading the Hornets, 50-21.
Delaware State scored double digits in the fourth quarter. Noami Zulueta scored her team-high 10th point to begin the scoring for the Hornets. However, Drexel outscored the Hornets 15-12. LaClair ended the game with a career-best in points (12) and rebounds (7), while McGurk finished her first collegiate game with a 12-point performance.
