PHILADELPHIA - Drexel's Justin Moore followed his missed shot and banked home the game-winner with 2.1 seconds left to give Drexel (1-1) a come-from-behind victory at Winthrop, 74-72. The Dragons trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half and were in foul trouble most of the night, but scored the final four points to pick up the win in a game that was close the entire second half.
Winthrop held the lead for virtually the entire second half, but the Dragons stayed within seven points for the entire second half. It turned into a really tight game with just under seven minutes to play, when Lamar Oden, Jr. sank a key 3-pointer. In the final three minutes it was a one possession contest the rest of the way. Amari Williams twice tied the game up, the first on a pair of free throws with 1:31 to play and the next time on two free throws with just 41 ticks left on the clock. After that bucket, Winthrop was the recipient of two free throws as Moore got called for a foul away from the basket as he tried to come up with a steal. Kyle Harrison missed the first free throw and Drexel called timeout tied at 72 with 19 seconds left. Harrison then missed the second and Williams came up with the rebounds. He handed it off to Moore, who had the ball in his hands the rest of the way. The sophomore then found his way into the lane, missed a short jumper, but grabbed the board and put home his rebound for the second game-winning shot of his career.
Moore scored eight of his nine points in the final six minutes, including his second game-winning shot as a Dragon. Amari Williams led Drexel with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Yame Butler added 15 before fouling out with 4:25 to go. Lamar Oden, Jr. had a big second half, scoring all 13 of his points in the final 20 minutes. The senior also had a pair of 3-pointers and two steals. Lucas Monroe had his first 10-point game in a Drexel uniform. The graduate student from Penn had seven rebounds, five on the offensive end. The Dragons did a good job of taking care of the basketball, turning it over just six times overall and twice in the second half.
Kasen Harrison had 19 points for Winthrop, who fell to 1-2. Winthrop did most of its damage from the free throw line. The Eagles were 25-for-36 from the charity stripe. Drexel held Winthrop to just 3-for-13 shooting from behind the arc and forced 10 turnovers.
