Dragons Knock Off the CAA Leader in the DAC
PHILADELPHIA - Justin Moore sank a 17-foot jumper with just 3.7 seconds to play as Drexel rallied for a stunning 70-69 victory against the College of Charleston. The Dragons trailed as many as 13 but rallied to take their first lead of the second half on their final possession. Drexel stayed undefeated in conference play at the Daskalakis Athletic Center and defeated the Colonial Athletic Association leader for the second straight time in the final seconds.
Charleston (21-3, 9-2 CAA), who was ranked last week and was 27th in votes in this week's AP Poll, led for the majority of the game and appeared in control. Leading by eight points with five minutes to play The Dragons (13-10, 7-4) then scored five straight points to make it a one-possession contest when Coletrane Washington nailed a 3-pointer with 4:24 to play. Drexel had missed its first 13 long-range attempts before Washington's shot made it 64-61. The Cougars, who seemed to have an answer for each Drexel run, extended the lead to five on two occasions down the stretch. Dalton Bolon hit a 3-pointer late in the shot clock to put Charleston ahead, 69-64, with 2:19 to play. That would be the last points on the night for the visitors.
Amari Williams was fouled on the ensuing possession and made both of his free throw attempts. The Dragons came up with a stop and Moore was fouled with 1:03 to play. He calmly sank both attempts to make it a 69-68 game. Charleston came down court and had a shot blocked by Amari Williams but came up with the offensive board as time was winding down. Once again, the Drexel defense came up big and forced a shot clock violation with just 13 ticks left on the clock. That set up Moore, who looked to drive to the basket, but pulled up and sank a jumper to give Drexel the lead. Drexel called time to set up its defense and to put in Jamie Bergens and Lamar Oden, Jr. on the defensive end. Charleston inbounded the ball, but Ryan Larson's 3-pointer from just inside over half court was no good as the Dragons made it six straight CAA wins at home.
Williams picked up his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He was 6-for-8 from the floor and 7-for-9 from the line. The junior also had four rejections and three assists. Moore finished the game with 16 points and had a career-high eight rebounds. It was his seventh straight game with 10 points or more. Washington added 13 points as the Dragons shot 57 percent in the second half to claw their way back into the game. Drexel's offense heated up down the stretch as the Dragons scored on eight of their final nine possessions.
The Cougars, who led by eight at intermission, were led by Bolon's 19 points. Ben Burnham came off the bench to score 14. The Drexel defense held the Cougars 11 points below their average and to just 34 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes. Both teams struggled from behind the arc on Thursday night. The Cougars, who came in averaging more than 10 3-pointers per game, were 5-for-23 from deep (.217). Drexel was just 2-for-15, but made its final two 3-pointers in the game.
The Dragons will play three of their next four games on the road. That stretch begins at Monmouth on Saturday at 2 p.m.
