LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Amari Williams 3-point attempt as time expired bounced off the rim as Monmouth rallied to defeat Drexel, 69-67, at OceantFirst Bank Center. Monmouth closed the game on an 8-1 run to win their third-straight game. Drexel fell to 13-11 overall and 7-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
Drexel led 66-61 with 4:59 to go when Jamie Bergens took a nice pass from Justin Moore and knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key. That would be the last field goal of the games for the Dragons, as Drexel missed its last five shots of the game. Monmouth would get buckets from Myles Foster and Jack Collins to cut it to one, and then Collins made a pair of free throws to put the Hawks ahead with 1:34 to play. The Dragons tied the score at 67-67 when Williams made one of two free throws 12 seconds later. Monmouth then took the lead for good at the one minute mark on two Foster free throws. Each team had an empty possession before the Dragons got the ball back and had a chance to win it or tie it. Williams received the inbounds but couldn't find anyone open and had to shoot a 3-pointer from the left wing. The Hawks were able to rally from a 12-point halftime deficit as Drexel shot 63 percent in the opening half. They managed to make just seven of their 23 shots (.304) in the final 20 minutes.
Luke House led Drexel with 18 points, 15 of them coming in the first half. He was 4-for-4 from behind the arc. Lamar Oden, Jr. and Jamie Bergens each scored 13 points for DU. Williams had his second-straight double-double with 12 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
Tahron Allen led the Hawks (4-20, 3-8) with 19 points, with 12 of those coming in the second half. Myles Foster added 15 points.
The Dragons will play a rare Wednesday night game this week. Drexel faces arch-rival Delaware at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
