PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's basketball team closed the regular season with a convincing 75-48 win against Northeastern at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons finished with a 10-8 record in league play and are now 16-14 overall. It marked the first time since 2012 that the Dragons won 10 league games in back-to-back seasons. Yame Butler led the Dragons with 22 points.
The Dragons used an early 12-0 second half run to open up a 25-point lead and cruised the rest of the way. Luke House and Mate Okros had big second half performances for the Dragons. Both players had 10 points in the half. House, who finished with 14 points, did most of his damage inside, posting up on the block and finishing near the rim. Okros sank a pair of 3-pointers during the run and scored inside on two other occasions.
Drexel's 16 wins are the most for the program since reaching that total during the 2013-14 season. The win also guaranteed the Dragons their third consecutive winning season. The last time Drexel strung together three straight seasons above .500 came back in 2005.
Amare Williams returned after missing the Hampton game with an injury and had a big night. He had nine points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots. Lamar Oden, Jr. also finished with nine points. Butler was 7-for-13 from the floor and had three 3-pointers. It was his third-straight game with at least 20 points. The Drexel defense played well again and held Northeastern to just 32 percent shooting and 48 points. It was the 12th time this season Drexel held an opponent to less than 60 points.
Both teams struggled to score in a low scoring first half. Drexel went on a 13-1 run to take the lead late in the first half. The Drexel defense held the Huskies without a field goal for a stretch of 4:34 as they took the lead for good. Butler had 12 of his 22 points in the opening frame.
Jahmyl Telfort led Northeastern with 18 points. He was the only Husky to score more than six points. Joe Pridgen had five points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Dragons will be the fifth-seed at the upcoming CAA Championships in Washington, D.C. They will play at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 4 against the winner of the play-in game.
