Dragons Clinch First Round Bye In CAA Tournament With Defensive Win Against Tribe

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team held William & Mary to 33 percent shooting for the game as the Dragons beat the Tribe 55-47 on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Drexel clinched a First Round bye in the upcoming CAA Tournament and will now play its first game in the quarterfinals on March 10.

Drexel wraps the regular season with a Senior Day contest against North Carolina A&T on Saturday, March 4. Tipoff from the Daskalakis Athletic Center is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

BY THE NUMBERS
- Keishana Washington scored 20, her 23rd game this season with 20+ points.
- Kylie Lavelle joined Washington in double figures with 10.
- Maura Hendrixson had nine assists, moving her into the top-10 on the CAA single-season list. She also scored six in the contest.
- Grace O'Neill pulled in a team-high eight rebounds, adding six points and two steals.
- Hetta Saatman scored eight with four boards, a steal and a block.
- Drexel has held its last three opponents to 45.3 PPG.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first quarter was one where both teams had spurts of seven points in a row. The Dragons' second 7-0 push of the frame ended the period, allowing DU to take a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes. Five different players scored in the quarter for Drexel.
- DU turned up the defense in the second period, holding William & Mary to 2-for-11 shooting while forcing five turnovers. The Dragons used a strong offensive start to the stanza to take a 28-17 lead into the break.
- Washington began to heat up to start the third, scoring six of the first eight points and delivering a no-look pass through a double team for two more as the Dragons upped their lead to 12 by the midway point. The Tribe responded, tallied the next eight points and 11 of 13 before a jumper by Washington allowed Drexel to hold a 40-36 lead into the final 10 minutes.
- The game remained close through the first two minutes of the fourth when O'Neill stepped up and hit a big three, her first field goal of the game, to put the Dragons up 45-38. From that point, William & Mary got no closer than five points as Drexel pulled away during the next four minutes to seal the win.
