BANDON, Ore. - Griffin Mitchell fired a four-under-par 68 on Tuesday and finished the Bandon Dunes Championship in a tie for eighth place overall. As a team, Drexel placed 15th in their first-ever visit to one of the top golf destinations in the United States.
Mitchell had a memorable round on the Bandon Dunes Course. He made seven birdies on the day and was three-under-par on the front nine. His 68 tied Ian Gilligan of Long Beach State with the best round of the day. Gilligan came into the tournament ranked 19th in the nation. Mitchell ended the event at 145, just one shot over par. Owen Avrit of Oregon, who is ranked 28th in the country, won the tournament with a four-under-par 140.
Drue Nicholas rebounded nicely on Tuesday with a two-under 70. Oscar Maxfield was Drexel's second-best finisher in the Championship at 154.
Oregon shot six-under par in the final round and won the Bandon Dunes Championship by seven strokes over both Oregon State and Utah. Boise State and San Jose State rounded out the top five. The 17 teams played 36 holes in the tournament after Monday's round was canceled due to weather.
