
Wrestling Earns Nation's Top GPA and Seven Dragons Garner NWCA Scholar All-American Honors

MANHEIM, Pa. - Drexel University wrestling was named the nation's top academic team by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the organization announced on Friday. In addition, seven Dragons received 2023 Division I Scholar All-American honors; Antonio Mininno, Brian Bonino, Evan Barczak, Sean O'Malley, Kyle Waterman, Luke Nichter, and Tyler Williams.
DU boasted the best team GPA in the nation for the third time in the last five years with a mark of 3.61. Drexel bested Cleveland State (3.55) and Wisconsin (3.52) to claim the honor.

Barczak, a graduate student and business administration major, received academic recognition from the NWCA for the fourth time. An at-large qualifier for the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships at 165 pounds, Barczak led the team with a 27-8 overall mark this season. The Central Valley, N.Y. native was recently named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic At-Large Team and is a four-time Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Academic Achievement Award winner.
Bonino a graduate student and business administration major, received academic recognition from the NWCA for the first time after achieving a 4.0. An automatic qualifier for the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships at 165 pounds, Bonino came up short with a top-12 finish at the NCAA Championships and held a 24-10 record this season. Earlier this month, he was named an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Academic Achievement Award winner.
Mininno, a graduate health administration major earns his first NWCA Scholar All-American nod. The native of Deptford, N.J. is a two-time EIWA Academic Achievement Award winner at 125 pounds. He closed his career as an NCAA qualifier and a two-time EIWA place winner.
O'Malley, an entrepreneurship and innovation graduate business student, finished 7th at the 2023 EIWA Championships at 197 pounds. The native of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. finished the year at 13-11, finding three falls, and nine decision victories including an upset sudden victory at the EIWAs. O'Malley received his fourth EIWA Academic Achievement Award earlier this month.
Williams earned his second NWCA Scholar All-American recognition. The senior placed 8th at 157 pounds at the EIWA Championships. Additionally, he was awarded his fourth EIWA Academic Achievement Award earlier this month.
Nichter earned his third NWCA Academic Recognition in as many years. The junior was recently named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic At-Large Team and is a three-time Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Academic Achievement Award winner.
Waterman placed 6th in the conference tournament and finished the year at 15-11 at 133 lbs. This is the junior accounting major's second consecutive year as an NWCA All-American. The Holland, Pa. native was honored to the 2023 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic At-Large Team and is a two-time Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Academic Achievement Award winner
In total, 291 individuals from 73 different institutions received academic recognition.
