PHILADELPHIA – For a fifth consecutive year, the Drexel women's rowing team kept the Lela H. Kerr Cup at home as the Dragons excelled at the Kerr Cup Regatta on Saturday.
It is the 15th time in the last 20 seasons the women have won the cup, named for the wife of the founder of Drexel rowing, Dr. Thomas Kerr. Members of the Kerr family were on hand to present the Dragons with the medals and the cup.
The Varsity 8+ continued its dominating effort on the year and were rowing in open water by the 1,000 meter mark of the grand final. The team of Natalie Cleri (coxswain), Taylor Powell (stroke), Mollie Knoff, Julianna Rogers, Hayley McKeever, Kirby Droogan, Rita Keefer, Giavanna Hunt and Morgan Van Dexter (bow) took Jim & Toni Downey across the finish line in 7:28.2 through high winds, besting second place La Salle by more than 15 seconds.
Also taking home a gold medal was the 2V8+ "A" boat. Competing in Alleva XVII, Chloe Minicucci (coxswain), Katie Ernst (stroke), Valentina Frusone, Sophia Lamb, Hannah Walseth, Lexie Hain, Rachel Civan, Avery Panico and Kayla Driscoll (bow) were the only boat in the finals to go under eight minutes, crossing the finish line in 7:51.0
The V4+ "A" earned a silver medal as Chloe Speciale (coxswain), Anna Kretzer (stroke), Genevieve Rowlands, Sarah Ghazaz and Ariana Townsend rowed Marci to a time of 8:41.6. The "B" came in third in 8:58.5
Up next, Drexel takes on its city rivals as the Dragons compete at the Kelly Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River on April 29. DU will celebrate Senior Day prior to the event.
