Twice As Nice: Drexel Wins Second Straight Men's Points Title at Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – For a second consecutive year, the Drexel men's rowing team took the men's points trophy as the Dragons were crowned champions at the 84th Annual Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta on the Cooper River on Saturday.
Drexel clinched the men's points title with a win in the Varsity 8+, finishing with 117 points on the day. It is the first time the Dragons have won the men's points title two years in a row.
It is also the second straight year DU took earned the gold medal in both the First and Second Varsity 8+ boats.
In the final event of the day, competing in Lois Krall III, the group of Sam DeSilva (coxswain), John Karen (stroke), Nikola Loncar, Josh Diggons, Damian Lis, James Schmidt, Andrew Manns, Jack Anderson and Andrei Malis (bow) found themselves in a tight race where no one led by more than three seats for the first 1,800 meters. The Dragons had the finishing effort, however, closing with a with a time of 5:41.265, besting La Salle by two seconds. The win secured the men's points title as the 30 points from the race pulled DU past Temple.
Rowing in Lois Krall II, the 2V8+ rallied in the second half of its race as Billy Ernst (coxswain), Jake Miller (stroke), Roman Smigiel, Vuk Mladenovic, Nemanja Sajatovic, Alex Manolarakis, Nick Foley, Kosta Petkovic and Sam Valigorsky (bow) pulled even with Temple at the 500 meter mark left before rallying to defeat the Owls in a time of 5:48.798
Starting the day off for the Dragons was the Novice 8+. Rowing in Annette Pennoni, Charlotte Bentrim (coxswain), George Karacsonyi (stroke), Jono Andersson, Ben Werber, Aidan Ionescu, Gavin Roe, Justin Getty, Sam Duncan and Gustavo Lezama pulled away in the final 250 meters to beat Temple by four seconds, clocking in with a time of 6:01.232.
Up next for the Dragons is the IRA Nationals, June 2-4 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
