PHILADELPHIA – Paul Savell, the head coach of the Drexel men's and women's rowing teams, has been selected as the 2023 Collegiate Coach of the Year by the Philadelphia Coaches Conference as announced on Tuesday on the campus of Temple University.
The award recognizes the top collegiate coach in any sport in the Philadelphia region and is voted on by fellow coaches in the city.
"It is an honor to receive this award on behalf of our hardworking coaching staff," said Savell. "This honor is not possible without them and our dedicated student-athletes. It is a great symbol of recognition for their successes this past year. I'm humbled and honored as there are many outstanding coaches in the Philadelphia region who are deserving of this type of honor."
The 2022-23 Drexel rowing season saw the program improve to new heights. The men's team claimed back-to-back points titles at the Dad Vail Regatta for the first time in program history and won the Varsity 8+ and 2V8+ gold medal at the event in consecutive seasons. The Dragons also had their best finish ever at the IRA National Championships.
On the women's side, Drexel turned in its best two performances at the CAA Championships in 2022 and 2023. DU also won the V8+ at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta, turning in an amazing effort after starting in 31st position. In the spring season, the Dragons won the Knecht Cup, Kerr Cup and Kelly Cup in three straight weeks.
Savell joins an impressive list of winners from previous years that include Lynn Farquhar, Saint Joseph's field hockey; Jad Prachniak, West Chester baseball; Jaclyn Hartzell, University of the Sciences women's basketball; Matt Rhule, Temple football; and Jay Wright, Villanova basketball.
