STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Two early goals by the Dragons propelled the team past the Stony Brook Seawolves on Saturday afternoon on Long Island, 2-1. It is the first time the Dragons have been victorious at Stony Brook.
Drexel has now won five of the last six matches and own a 3-2 conference record with three CAA games left to play.
Alessandro Capogna started between the posts and pieced together a career day. The graduate student made seven stops. The only shot to get past him was from the penalty strike. The Seawolves managed to take 19 total shots during the game.
Drexel struck first in the 17th minute of the game. A good move by Dominick Bachstein allowed him to play it into the middle of the box where Giancarlo Vaccaro only needed to touch the ball to record the goal. The goal was Vaccaro's second of the season.
Just under six minutes later, Bachstein scored his ninth goal of the season and doubled Drexel's lead to two. The graduate student completed a perfect give-and-go with Patrick Short and was left wide open for the strike. The goal proved to be the game-winner. It is the third straight match that Bachstein has tallied a goal and point. The Malvern, Pa. native has nine goals and five assists for a total of 23 points this season.
The Dragons' two-goal lead did not hold for long. Less than a minute later, Stony Brook was awarded a penalty kick, which the Seawolves capitalized on.
Both teams were unable to score for the rest of the match, but a red card assessed to Gavin Carmichael in the 63rd minute gave the home squad the ultimate advantage. However, the Drexel defense was too much for Stony Brook to handle and could not score.
Drexel returns to Vidas Field on Saturday, October 19 to honor the team's seniors prior to its match against William & Mary. Vaccaro, Carles Aliberch, Short, Ori Arzi, Stephen Appiah and Bachstein will all be recognized.
