Dragons Hold off Leopards for Ninth Straight Victory, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team extended its winning streak to nine straight games as the Dragons took down Lafayette Friday night at Buckley Field, 3-2. This streak tied their longest since the 2010 season when they also had a nine-game win streak. Drexel currently sits at the top of the CAA standings with a perfect 4-0 record in the conference.

Valentine Van Hellemont stays red hot to get the scoring going just three minutes into the game. This is the sophomores fourth straight game with a goal and the longest streak of her young career.

Marti Sanabria joined the goal party 11 minutes later to give the Dragons an early 2-0 lead.

After a 2-0 halftime deficit, Lafayette got themselves on the board quickly in the second half. A goal by Josephine Van Wijk at the 34-minute mark brought the score to 2-1. The excitement would not last long as the Dragons only took one minute to regain that two-goal advantage as Valentine added her second goal of the game.

An early fourth quarter goal by the Leopards brought the score to 3-2, but Drexel was able to hold on for the rest of the quarter to take their ninth straight victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

Valentine Van Hellemont scored two goals today, her second multi goal game of the season. She now leads the team in goals with eight.
Marti Sanabria tallied her third goal of the season.
Tina Rawa, Pien Elsen, Pilli Lemoine and Val Van Hellemont all added an assist in the game.
Alana Poole added four saves.
