Dragons Defeat La Salle in First-Ever Big 5 Game, 73-40

PHILADELPHIA – In its first ever Big 5 game in program history, the Drexel women's basketball team defeated the La Salle Explorers, 73-40. The Dragons received double-digit performances from three players and held the Explorers to 15-for-55 from the floor at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Wednesday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker extended her double-digit scoring streak to 14 games after scoring 22 points. The senior went 7-for-16 from the field and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. Baker also added three rebounds, two assists and two steals to her stat sheet.
Deja Evans scored 14 points after shooting 5-for-7 and corralling four rebounds. The sophomore also blocked three shots.
Chloe Hodges finished with a line of 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
The Dragons played with the lead for 36:48. The Explorers held one lead and it lasted for less than a minute.
Drexel's defense was top-notch. The Dragons not only held La Salle to 40 points, but the team also forced 19 turnovers, blocked three shots and tallied 12 steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons opened with a 12-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game. A 7-0 run by the Dragons drew a timeout from the Explorers with 5:22 remaining in the quarter. For the remainder of the frame, Drexel only allowed two points, while scoring 11 more. Fueled by a 10-point frame by Baker, the Dragons shot 8-for-18 and forced eight turnovers.
The second quarter was a defensive battle. Drexel outscored the La Salle, 10-9. Baker added five points to her total while Hodges scored four. The Dragons forced another six turnovers to close the first half, 33-16.
The Dragons poured on 22 points in the third quarter. Five-point performances from Laine McGurk and Deja Evans helped the Dragons outscore the Explorers and hold them to just 14 points.
In the fourth frame, Iriona Gravley and Emilee Jones each saw the first minutes of their collegiate career and both contributed to the final score. Gravley scored two points and corralled three boards, while Jones scored five points with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws. The Dragons, for the fourth frame in-a-row, outscored the Explorers 18-10.

Drexel returns to the Daskalakis Athletic Center on November 20 to close out its three-game homestretch. UC Irvine travels to Philadelphia to face the Dragons at 6 p.m.
