Drexel's Second-Half Comeback Not Enough, Downed by Monmouth, 61-55

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Drexel women's basketball team outscored the Monmouth Hawks, 37-33 in the second half, but it was not enough to defeat the reigning CAA Champions, falling to the Hawks, 61-55.
BY THE NUMBERS
Laine McGurk scored a career-high 21 points on 8-for-19 from the field and grabbed five boards. The freshman also set a career mark from deep, hitting 4-of-9 from long range. McGurk's 21 points were all scored in the second half of the game.
Amaris Baker added 10 points and shot 5-for-10 from the field.
The Dragons caused 23 turnovers and scored 21 points off those turnovers. On offense, DU only lost the ball 10 times.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks had a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Dragons held MU to just eight shots in the frame. In addition, the Dragons forced 12 turnovers. Mullin led the Dragons after one quarter with five points on 2-for-3 shooting.
Monmouth scored 17 points in the second quarter and took a 10-point lead into the locker room at halftime. On the other end of the floor, Drexel scored eight points, a total of 18 for the half. Valentine added four points and a pair of rebounds to her line.
Drexel trimmed the Monmouth lead to just three by the end of the third quarter, scoring 19 points. The Dragons held Monmouth to 12 points in the third and forced three more turnovers, pushing the team total to 18 for the game. McGurk scored nine points for Drexel on 3-for-5 shooting and 2-for-3 from deep.
The Hawks scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and held DU to 18. McGurk continued to lead the Dragons with 12 more points to push her total to 21. The Hawks, however, shot 8-for-14 to stave off the red-hot Drexel offense.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel returns home to the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Sunday, February 25 to open a three-game home stretch, including the final home game of the regular season. The Dragons host the UNCW Seahawks at 1 p.m.
