Drexel Remembers Dr. Hazem Maragah
3/15/2024 2:01:00 PM | Drexel Athletics
Hazem Maragah, PhD, professor emeritus of Decision Sciences and MIS, passed away peacefully in January at his home in Marco Island, Florida. Hazem was a positive presence, not only in the classroom, but across the entire Drexel community and we know he will be deeply missed.
Hazem received a bachelor's degree in statistics from the University of Baghdad, Iraq, in 1977; a master's degree in statistics from Oklahoma State University in 1981; and a doctorate in statistics from Louisiana University at Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1989.
He joined the LeBow faculty in 1989. His contributions over his 33-year career were many. Hazem served as President of the Drexel Athletic Club, and for more than a decade, as Faculty Athletic Representative. He served as a member of many boards and committees, including the Judicial Board, the Provost's Council on Academic Sustainability, the Board of Trustees' Human Resources Committee and the President's Board of Visitors. He was always a champion for the Decision Sciences department and served as department head in 2003-04.
Hazem looked at Drexel as his family and had his own unique way of saying, "Go, Dragons!" This enthusiasm was especially evident at Drexel games where he was a permanent fixture and led many "High Five" celebrations in his own inimitable way. A steadfast Drexel Athletics supporter, the Hazem Maragah Suite in the Daskalakis Athletic Center is named in his honor, ensuring his continuing presence on campus. He also generously supported LeBow, including establishing the Hazem D. Maragah, PhD, Endowed Scholarship Fund for students in the Decision Sciences department in 2014.
Before his retirement in 2022, he received the Special Distinction Award as part of the 2022 Drexel Alumni Awards. The award video captured Hazem's love of Drexel. The University community was truly family to him, and he saw his students as his own kids. He was also the recipient of the LeBow College 2001 Outstanding Service Award, the 2000 Award for Outstanding Service to the University and the 2023 Drexel University Athletic Director Legacy Award.
Please join us for a celebration of life for Hazem on Monday, April 15, at 4 p.m. in the DiPiero Grand Meeting Room (GHALL 220), followed by a wine and cheese reception. RSVP here to attend.
Our deepest condolences go out to all who knew and worked with him over his distinguished tenure as a part of his Drexel family.
