Luke House and Lucas Monroe Combine for 41 Points as Dragons Clinch Second Seed
PHILADELPHIA - Luke House scored 23 points and Lucas Monroe added 18 as Drexel used another second-half spurt to defeat Northeastern on Senior Night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 73-59. With the win, the Dragons cliched the second seed in the 2024 Jersey Mike's CAA Men's Basketball Championship. The Dragons (20-11, 13-5 CAA) will play the winner of Stony Brook and Northeastern on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.
Drexel picked up its 20th win of the season on Saturday. It is only the 11th time in school history that the Dragons have won 20 games and the first time since the 2011-12 season. It was also the 13th straight home win as the Dragons were perfect against CAA foes here in West Philadelphia. It is the longest home winning streak since the same 2011-12 team won 15 in a row at the DAC to start the season.
The Dragons scored the first 11 points of the game and looked like they would run away from the Huskies. 15-2 less than five minutes into the contest. House had a huge first half, making four 3-pointers and throwing down a dunk as the Dragons led by 13 at intermission. Drexel shot 58 percent in the first half and despite committing seven turnovers, scored 40 points in the opening frame.
Drexel's lead increased to 16 points after Amari Williams threw down an alley-oop feed from Mate Okros just three minutes in that put the crowd of more than 2,000 in a frenzy. However, Northeastern's offense started to click and the Dragons went cold. NU scored 13 straight points to get right back into the game. Drexel finally broke a scoreless streak of more than seven minutes when Jamie Bergens scored on a floater with just under 11 minutes to play. The Huskies answered that with a Chris Doherty 3-pointer and all of a sudden Northeastern was down by just two points at 49-47.
The Dragons, as they have done the last three games, put together their own stretch of 10 or more points in a row. This time, Drexel rattled of 13 straight points to put the game out of reach at 67-50 with five minutes remaining. Monroe had eight points in the run and finished with a career-best 18 points. He was 9-for-10 shooting in the game and led DU with nine rebounds.
House finished the night 8-for-14 and had five 3-pointers. Yame Butler came off the bench and had an efficient 13 points and was 3-for-3 from deep. Williams had 11 points and five rebounds, while Jamie Bergens handed out a career-best six assists. The Dragons ended the night 53 percent from the floor and sank eight of 16 3-point attempts.
Doherty scored 18 to lead the Huskies, who fell to 12-19 overall and 7-11 in CAA games. Masai Troutman scored 13 points and Harold Woods added 10.
