LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. - The Drexel golf team picked up its fifth victory of the season by defeating the University Rhode Island in the Dragon Match Play Invitational. Drexel defeated La Salle in the opening round, 4-1, before earning the title with a 3-2 win against the Rams.
The afternoon match against the Rams made for some compelling golf. Drue Nicholas got the Dragons off to a quick start. He won his match in only 11 holes, which gave Drexel its second point of the day. URI played well and quickly took leads in each of the other three match-ups. Griffin Mitchell was down by five after eight holes to Bryson Richards, but slowly chipped away at the lead. He won the ninth and 10th hole to slice the lead to three. Mitchell then tied it up after winning the 13th and 14th hole. His match remained tied until the 18th hole, when Mitchell managed a par, while Richards had a bogey to give Drexel the hard earned victory.
In the semifinals, Drexel met up with city-rival La Salle. The Dragons had strong performances up and down the line-up. Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa made quick work out of his opponent, clinching his match after just 11 holes. Mitchell and Nicholas also closed their matches out early, while Oscar Maxfield picked up the other Drexel win.
Drexel's four seniors were honored on Tuesday in front of family, friends and staff. It was the last home appearance for Bank Apinyawuttikul, Liam Hart, Nyamukondiwa and Maxfield. Drexel will begin play in the Coastal Athletic Association Championships on April 21 in St. Helena's Island, S.C.
