PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Head Coach Zach Spiker has announced the signings of six student-athletes that will join the men's basketball team for the upcoming season. Ralph Akuta, Jason Drake, Clem Edomwonyin, Victor Panov, Josh Reed and Kevon Vanderhorst announced they will be attending Drexel beginning in the 2024-25 academic year.
"We had a very good spring with our six returning scholarship players and we are excited about the six student-athletes that we have added to our program," said Drexel Head Coach Zach Spiker.
Akuta is a freshman from Ijamsville, Md. Akuta stands at 7-foot-1 and is the first seven-foot recruit since Spiker took over as head coach. He played last season at Hargrave Military Academy, the same school that produced former Drexel standout Chaz Crawford.
Edomwonyin is a forward from England. The 6-foot-9 forward played at the City of London Academy before coming to the United States, where he attended the South Kent School. He is the third recruit from a high school in England for the Dragons in the last five years. The previous players were Mate Okros and Amari Williams.
Panov, a 6-foot-7 forward, is a transfer from Daytona State College. He averaged 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds for a team that finished 28-4 last year. Panov scored 25 points or more on three occasions last season. He began his collegiate career at Cal State Fullerton and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
"We added size with Ralph, Clem and Victor," Spiker said. "The three of them have the ability to help us with rim protection, rebounding and stretching the floor."
Drake is a 6-foot-2 point guard who attended Butler Community College last season, where he averaged 9.6 points and 3.7 assists per game. He previously attended Cleveland State University for one season. Drake, who goes by "Deuce," is from Oak Park, Michigan. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Reed is a 6-foot-2 wing from nearby Wyndmoor, Pa. He was a First Team All-Catholic League selection from Archbishop Wood High School. Reed averaged 18.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists in his final season. He also shot 35 percent from long range.
Vanderhorst comes to Drexel from Brunswick Community College. He played one season at Brunswick where he averaged 13 points and 4.4 assists per game and was named a NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American. Vanderhorst has three years of eligibility remaining.
"Adding Jason, Josh and Kevon gives us speed, toughness and athleticism in our backcourt," Spiker said. "Jason and Kevon are two experienced junior college athletes, while Josh excelled in the Catholic League against top-notch competition. We have a nice blend of experience and youthfulness on the roster and I'm looking forward to seeing how this group comes together."
The Dragons were 20-12 last season and finished in second place in the CAA with a 13-5 record.
