PHILADELPHIA - Drexel wrestling has announced that Jimmy Overhiser and Chad Walsh have joined the program as assistant coaches for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Overhiser comes to Philadelphia after one season as an assistant coach at Army. During his time at West Point, Overhiser helped coach three Black Knights to the NCAA tournament. The 2023-24 freshman class was also ranked 17th in the country by Intermat and 21st in the nation by Matscouts.
"Jimmy brings valuable knowledge and experience to the program," said Mert '67 and Joanne '69 Head Coach Matt Azevedo. "Jimmy loves to recruit and develop student-athletes. He has an eye for talent and a tremendous work ethic. I know he will add so much value on the recruiting front and in the room working with our guys."
The Bradford, N.Y. native also made stints at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Reinhardt. Under his guidance, he helped 15 student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Tournament, including three All-Americans and a National Champion. Overhiser most recently helped Tarleton State University with the start of its new wrestling program.
"I am thrilled to join the Dragon family," said Overhiser. "The sky's the limit for this program and I cannot wait to be a part of the success to come."
The former 149-pounder was a member of the Cornell wrestling team for four seasons. He graduated from Cornell in 2020 with a degree in architecture art and planning.
Walsh comes to Drexel after spending two years at Columbia as an assistant coach, working primarily with middleweights. While with the Lions, Walsh had ten NCAA qualifiers, 2 EIWA Champions and an NCAA All-American. Columbia finished both seasons with a top-four finish at the EIWA Tournament.
"Chad brings so much passion to his coaching," said Azevedo. "Chad has so much wisdom to share with our team both from his experiences as an All-American and five years of coaching at the Division I level. His reputation speaks for itself."
Before his time with Columbia, Walsh spent three seasons at Davidson as an assistant coach. During the 2021-22 season, the Wildcats had their most successful season since 2005, with three wrestlers being named to the RPI for the first time in program history. Walsh also spent one season with Rider from 2018-19.
"I am really excited to be joining Coach Azevedo's staff," said Walsh. "I want to thank him for helping me turn this dream into a reality. This opportunity at Drexel truly hits home for me. Many of the members on this team I consider younger brothers of mine"
Before making the leap to coaching, Walsh was a member of the Rider wrestling team for five seasons. The Cherry Hill, N.J. native was a two-time NCAA All-American at 157 lbs and 165 lbs, one of only two wrestlers to earn the honor twice in program history. He is the Broncs' all-time leader in wins by falls (39), breaking a nearly 35-year-old record (29).
Walsh earned his bachelor of arts degree in sociology and a master's in athletic leadership from Rider while earning four Academic All-American honors.
