Drexel Athletics Inducts Six into the Hall of Fame

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Athletics inducted six people into the Janet E. and Barry C. Burkholder Athletics Hall of Fame this morning. The induction ceremony took place at The Study in University City prior to the Homecoming basketball game against Delaware, where the Hall of Fame Class of 2025 was introduced to a sell-out crowd.
The 2025 class is comprised of Gabriela Marginean (women's basketball), Joe Linderman (men's basketball), Ryan Hluschak (wrestling), Emily Hoesch (women's lacrosse), Kerry Kelly (women's lacrosse) and former soccer head coach and administrator Johnson Bowie.
Gabriela Marginean - Women's Basketball - Class of 2010
Marginean is the most decorated women's basketball player in school history. The 2010 Mary Semanik Award winner and Honorable Mention AP All-American set the Philadelphia women's basketball career scoring record with 2,581 points, a record that stood for more than a decade. The three-time All-CAA First Team selection was named the 2009 CAA Player of the Year. She led Drexel to its first-ever CAA title and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Marginean still holds Drexel's career records for points per game (20.6), free-throw percentage (.889) and field goals made. She is also second in rebounds (947), fourth in field-goal percentage (.471) and eighth in steals (203). In 2007, the native of Romania had school records of 47 points and 22 rebounds in a five overtime win against Northeastern. She also led the nation in free throw percentage as a sophomore. Marginean was named the 2010 Dean Ehlers Leadership Award winner by the CAA. She was also the CAA Rookie of the Year and All-CAA Third Team as a freshman in 2007. Marginean was the recipient of the 2009 Philadelphia Sports Writers Outstanding Athlete Award. She was selected in the third round of the WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx and became the first Drexel player to play in the league. Gabi was unable to attend the ceremony due to her current professional playing schedule, she will be honored in person at the Women's Basketball contest on February 9th against UNCW.
Joe Linderman - Men's Basketball - Class of 2001
Linderman is just one of four Drexel basketball players who rank in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding. He is currently fourth on Drexel's all-time scoring list with 1,816 points and is 10th all-time in rebounding at 808. The Reading Catholic graduate is also second all-time in field goal percentage at .564. He still holds three of the top nine single season field-goal percentages. A member of Drexel's All-Millennium Team, Linderman was a two-time First Team All-America East selection and was named to the Second Team on another occasion, He was named the 1996-97 America East Rookie of the Year. Linderman was selected to the America East All-Tournament team twice. He averaged 16.5 points and 7.3 rebounds in 110 career games at Drexel.
Ryan Hluschak - Wrestling - Class of 2008
Hluschak is one of just two All-American wrestlers in Drexel history. He earned the distinction in 2007 in the 157-pound weight class at the NCAA Championships. Hluschak defeated opponents from Iowa, Lehigh and Missouri before upsetting the second-seed with a takedown with 29 seconds left in overtime in Auburn Hills, Mich. Hluschak, the 2008 John Semanik Award winner, was a three-time NCAA Qualifier and finished his Drexel career second all-time at the school in wins (121) and career falls (30). He was a three-time F.C. Walton Award winner (team's MVP) and was named to the CAA and the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie teams. In the classroom, Hluschak was a four-time NWCA Academic All-American, a two-time CAA Scholar Athletic and the Philadelphia Inquirer's Performer of the Year in 2008.
Emily Hoesch - Women's Lacrosse - Class of 2007
Hoesch set the Drexel women's lacrosse record for career goals and points, records that stood for 15 years. She now ranks second in career goals with 189 and fourth in career points with 251. Hoesch also ranks in the top 10 in career assists (fourth), draw controls (third), caused turnovers (tied for fourth) and ground balls (10th). Hoesch was named All-Region three times by the IWLCA. She was a two-time First Team All-CAA pick and a Second Team selection on one other occasion. Hoesch led or tied for the team lead in goals in each of her four years. She led the nation in draw controls in 2004 with 3.94 per game.
Kerry Kelly - Women's Lacrosse - Class of 2007
Kerry Kelly of women's lacrosse set the school record with 94 assists and graduated right behind Hoesch in career points with 238. She is currently third all-time in assists and fifth in career points. Kelly also scored 144 goals, which is seventh best at the school. During her four seasons she led the team in assists three times. Kelly was a First Team All-CAA selection after her senior year, when she was also named a IWLCA First Team All-Region pick. She was named Second Team All-CAA and Second Teal All-Region in 2007.
The Dragons won 10 or more games in all four years Hoesch and Kelly played together. Three of their teams won 12 games, which tied for the school record for wins in a season at that time.
Johnson Bowie - Head Soccer Coach and Administrator
Johnson Bowie was the head coach of the men's soccer team from 1977-90. During his 14 seasons as the head coach, Bowie compiled a record of 127-89-16. His teams won the East Coast Conference championship on four occasions. Bowie was named ECC Coach of the Year three times and twice earned Philadelphia Soccer 7 Coach of the Year honors. He stepped down to become Drexel's men's athletic director when the school had separate departments for men and women. He was a fixture at Drexel for more than 40 years as a coach, administrator and athletic director.
