Drexel Defeats Old Dominion, 75-71

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel Dragons defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs Sunday afternoon, 75-71, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Kevon Vanderhorst scored a career-high 16 points.
BY THE NUMBERS
Vanderhorst shot 70% and had one rebound and a game-sealing steal.
Josh Reed led the team with 18 points off the bench, shooting 54% from the field, and three assists.
Shane Blakeney scored 15 while pulling down four rebounds and blocking two Monarch shots.
Drexel outrebounded Old Dominion 38-35 and shot a season high 76.2% from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons had a strong first half, leading for 17:33 and trailing for only 0:50. Kevon Vanderhorst shot 60% in the first half, putting up 11 points. Back-to-back three-point shots by Shane Blakeney and Kevon Vanderhorst put the Dragons up 15-6 early on. Garfield Turner had five rebounds in the half. Old Dominion took a 31-29 lead with 2:54 remaining in the half, but a second-chance three-pointer by Shane Blakeney put the Dragons back on top 26 seconds later. Drexel outrebounded the Monarchs 21-16 and blocked five shots in the opening frame.
The second half was a tense, back-and-forth game. Old Dominion started the half with a 10-6 run to take the lead before an and one by Garfield Turner and a three by Shane Blakeney helped the Dragons retake the lead. The Monarchs responded with a 12-4 run to go up six points with 12:17 remaining but Josh Reed and Martin de Laporterie cut the lead down to two.
Victor Panov connected with Garfield Turner for a layup to put the Dragons up one with 2:27 remaining. The game remained close until the end, but Villiam Garcia Adsten sank a three-point shot to put Drexel up 73-69 with 0:53 remaining. Old Dominion shot two free throws to cut the lead to two with 0:46 remaining, but with the game on the line, Kevon Vanderhorst stole the ball and set a career-high with a dunk to seal the win for Drexel.

Drexel will travel to Baltimore on Tuesday to play Morgan State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
