Dragons Earn Road Victory Against Marist, 71-61

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Drexel women's basketball team defeated the Marist Red Foxes, 71-61, on Friday night in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Amaris Baker scored a season-high 27 points to help Drexel begin the season with a 2-0 record.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker scored the 1000th point of her career in the first quarter of the game. The graduate student went on to shoot 10-for-20 with three three-pointers.
Deja Evans pieced together her second consecutive double-double after scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The last time a Dragon has had consecutive double-doubles was in March of 2022 when Tessa Brugler had two straight.
Laine McGurk scored 15 points, while Mariah Watkins chipped 10 points and corralled eight rebounds. The last time four Dragons scored double digits was on February 9, 2025 against UNCW.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel opened up the game pouring on 19 points in the first 10 minutes of play on 8-for-17 shooting. The Dragons also converted on three treys to help carry an eight-point lead to the second quarter.
DU added another 16 points to the score in the second quarter and held Marist to nine points to hold a 15-point lead heading into the locker room for halftime. The Dragons dominated the second-chance points category in the second quarter, leading the Red Foxes, 8-0.
Marist outscored Drexel 18-17 in the third quarter. The difference-maker of the quarter was Marist's streak of three-point balls that trimmed Drexel's lead to single digits. However, the Dragons launched a 5-point run to widen the lead.
Marist outscored the Dragons once more in the fourth quarter, 23-19. The Red Foxes trimmed the Drexel lead to nine.
UP NEXT
Drexel begins the home slate of the 2025-26 season on Wednesday, Nov. 12. The Dragons welcome the Penn Quakers to the Daskalakis Athletic Center for the first time since December 21, 2018. It will be the first time the two teams have met since December 20, 2019.
