Dragons Earn Big 5 Win Against Penn in Battle of 33rd Street, 72-55

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team opened Big 5 play with a 72-55 victory over University City foe Penn Wednesday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Molly Lavin recorded her first double-double as a Dragon, pouring in ten points and grabbing ten rebounds. The win is the first over the Quakers since the 2014-15 season.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker led the charge with 18 points, including 12 in the first quarter. The graduate student shot 7-for-15 from the field and connected on three triples.
Laine McGurk added 12 points, while Grace O'Neill chipped in eight.
Lavin recorded her first double-double as a Dragon, marking the third straight game in which a Drexel player has notched a double-double. It also marked the second consecutive contest in which the Dragons have scored 70 or more points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons poured on 27 points in the first 10 minutes of play and held the Quakers to 13 points. Drexel opened the game with a 6-2 run. The Quakers took the lead with just under seven minutes remaining, but that would be the last time in the first half the team would hold a lead. Drexel launched into a 21-6 point run to give itself a 14-point lead. Baker chipped in 12 points to lead the Dragons in scoring. Six of the eight Dragons who checked in during the first quarter.
The Dragons blew open the game in the second quarter, holding the Quakers to just one point. Drexel added 17 points to its total to take a 30-point lead into the locker room at halftime. McGurk paced the Dragons with eight points, while O'Neill turned in five points. After one half of basketball. Drexel was shooting 50 percent from the field, along with 50 percent from long range.

Penn dominated the final stretch, outscoring Drexel 23-11 over the last 15 minutes of play. The Quakers locked down defensively, holding the Dragons scoreless for the final four minutes of the game. Simone Sawyer fueled the late surge, scoring all eight of her points in the fourth quarter on 3-of-4 shooting, including a three-pointer.
