Dragons Fall to La Salle in Game One of the Toyota Big 5 Classic, 69-64

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel Dragons men's basketball team's comeback against the La Salle Explorers fell short Saturday afternoon, falling 68-64 in the first game of the Toyota Big 5 Classic at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Garfield Turner led the team with 12 points.
BY THE NUMBERS
Turner also pulled down eight rebounds and stole the ball twice.
Shane Blakeney scored 11 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and a block.
Josh Reed also scored 11 points. Reed had eight rebounds and two steals.
Victor Panov had 10 points and three rebounds in the contest.
In the second half the Dragons held the Explorers to 29.6% shooting from the field while shooting 44.1%. Drexel's defense shut down La Salle from three, holding them to 22.2% on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started as a tight, back-and-forth affair. Blakeney and Martin de LaPorterie combined for Drexel's first 12 points. A Reed jump shot at 12:15 put the Dragons up 19-16 before La Salle responded with a 22-3 run, leading 41-22 at the half. On offense, the Dragons outrebounded the Explorers 12-4.
Drexel started the second half strong, with a Blakeney jump shot at 17:01, capping off an 8-2 Drexel run. The Dragons continued to chip away at the lead before a Dillon Tingler three-pointer at 11:13 started a 13-0 run. A pair of free throws by Turner made the score 53-50 with 7:01 remaining. La Salle pulled away with a 10-4 run. The Dragons mounted another comeback with a three-pointer from Blakeney, pulling them within three with 0:04 remaining, but ultimately the Explorers pulled out the win.
