Hampton Edges Drexel, 63-58
2/13/2025 8:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HAMPTON, Va. - Kobe MaGee's 3-point attempt that would have tied the game with four seconds remaining came up just short as Drexel fell to Hampton, 63-58, in a CAA contest on Thursday night. The Dragons (13-13, 5-8) rallied from an 11-point second half deficit and briefly took the lead late in the game, but the Pirates held on for the win.
The Pirates (13-13, 5-8) opened the second half on a 13-3 run and led by as many as 11 points with 13 minutes to play in the game. The Dragons chipped away at the lead, then held Hampton without a point for a span of 5:23. During that time, Drexel scored seven straight points, and when Yame Butler scored on a driving lay-up with 2:26 to play, Drexel led 56-55. Hampton's Daniel Johnson broke the drought with his only bucket of the game at the 1:57 mark to get the Pirates the lead for good. Drexel missed a shot on its next possession and Hampton's Noah Farrakhan extended the lead to four on a tough jump shot with 65 seconds remaining. Shane Blakeney answered with a lay-in 13 seconds later, but that proved to be the final points of the night for the Dragons.
Butler and Blakeney each had 11 points to lead the Dragons. Drexel struggled from deep all night and made just four of its 21 long-range attempts. MaGee had seven rebounds as the Dragons were outrebounded by 10.
Farrakhan and Kyrese Mullen each scored 18 points to lead the Pirates. Mullen also had 12 rebounds and five assists. Hampton snared 14 offensive rebounds and turned those into 19 second chance points. The Pirates shot 58 percent over the final 20 minutes of the game
Drexel stays in Southern Virginia for a few more days as the Dragons will visit William & Mary on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
